Taking in the Buzz of MediaCity

with BBC Journalist Grace Mailey

“It was ideal to have industry professionals right on our doorstep and it gave us something to focus our dreams on.”

“I studied Broadcast Journalism at Salford and loved it! I loved studying at MediaCity. When I first visited on the open day, the place just had such a friendly buzz around it, as well as being a really modern professional environment. It was ideal to have industry professionals right on our doorstep and it gave us something to focus our dreams on.

We knew if we worked hard then a career in one of the media outlets based here would be possible.

I graduated in 2019 and was already working at BBC Radio Manchester as well as BBC Radio Merseyside. I had also completed a work placement at Granada Reports – therefore using the links from university and MediaCity to get me into the industry.

I then began freelancing at BBC 5 Live Sport and have since moved my way up from Journalism Researcher to Journalist.

This is a job that I really enjoy working to output live sport programmes across the 5 Live Network.

I’m a journalist and produce the Fantasy 606 podcast for BBC Sounds. I also help to put together the award-winning 5 Live Sport Saturday programme as well as outputting across other sports such as Tennis and Rugby League.

The best thing about Salford Quays for me is that everything is in one place. You can go for a walk, go for food, do your shopping, work and socialise all in one place.”
