Talking Sunrises, Sunsets and Celebrity Guests
with BBC journalist Daisy Herman
“Every day is different at BBC Breakfast – one day I could be chatting to a celebrity about a new show and the next I could be finding the best pictures for a breaking news story.”
“I studied Broadcast Journalism BA between 2018 to 2021 at the University of Salford.
Studying at MediaCity ignited my desire to work in media. Walking around the area and seeing ITV and BBC workers made my career goals seem like a reality. I knew amazing journalism was happening constantly in the area and loved studying within sight of the BBC and ITV buildings.
When I started working at the BBC, I already felt comfortable in MediaCity after studying there for 3 years (minus lockdown restrictions). The facilities at Salford University, such as the newsroom, gallery and TV studio, are very similar to the facilities in the BBC building I work in now. So that when I joined the team at BBC Breakfast I didn’t feel like I was in a completely unfamiliar environment.
I’m now a Broadcast Journalist on BBC Breakfast TV, also known as a Producer. I work with a team of talented journalists to create the morning breakfast show, which is broadcast 365 days a year.
My job during the day shift is to think of story ideas, find the perfect guest to sit on the sofa, do background research for the presenters, and organise any transport and crew.
During my night shifts (we are staffed 24 hours of the day), I make sure the show goes out smoothly during broadcast between 6am and 9am. Every day is different at BBC Breakfast – one day I could be chatting to a celebrity about a new show and the next I could be fin ding the best pictures for a breaking news story.
During the summer, a highlight is sitting out on the green and enjoying the food and drink from the vendors around MediaCity.
I love walking around the Quays during my lunch break or early in the morning; the water is so calming.
You can often catch exceptional sunrises and sunsets, especially on one of the many bridges across the water. Or you can enjoy a sunset meal on the terrace facing the water. I might sound like the Salford Quay’s PR team, but I genuinely love the area. So much so, in fact, I moved here after getting my first BBC job!”
